Great Lakes Kite Festival Returns

The State Park in Grand Haven comes to life with incredible kite performances this weekend. Don’t miss the fun!

For the 28th year, the world’s best kite flyers - individuals, pairs & teams will be performing continuously on Saturday, May 21 from 10am – 5pm & Sunday, May 22 from 11am – 5pm.

Kite enthusiast and their families are invited to experience different size kites with amazing capabilities controlled by professional kite handlers. There will also be an Open Flying Field to fly your own kite.

Free Fishing Weekend Coming Up

For the Valentine’s weekend, it’s a free fishing weekend for residents and out of state visitors.

All fishing license fees are waived for two days in Michigan, February 13 & 14 from 6:00am – 10:00pm. This allows fishing enthusiasts to enjoy the chance to catch all types of fish on both inland and Great Lakes’ waters during their respective open season. Just remember that all regulations still apply.

Kentwood High School to host Rainbow Run

The Falcon Rainbow Run is scheduled for Sunday, May 31, 2015 at East Kentwood High School, 6230 Kalamazoo Ave SE in Kentwood, MI 49508. Registration at 2:00pm, Race Time 3:00pm.

Start this 5K in White and end in Color. We are promoting unity within the community with a noncompetitive, fun event anyone of any age can enjoy.

Registration Fees:

$30 for Adults

$25 for Firemen/Police/Military

$25 for East Kentwood Athletes

$20 for Kids (12 & under)

If an entire team is interested in participating, there will be a group discount rate-please contact Katelyn Hines at 616-443-9019.

A separate registration form must be filled out for each participant.

 Aquinas College Hockey Gets New Home

News Release:

Aquinas College hockey will have a new home beginning in fall 2015. The college has recently signed a five-year agreement with the Southside Ice Arena in Byron Center, Michigan. Coached by Mark VanVliet, the Aquinas Saints men’s hockey team enters its fourth year of collegiate play in fall 2015. The 2015-2016 academic year will be the inaugural year for the Aquinas Saints women’s hockey program, under the leadership of head coach Katie O’Brien.

"The Southside ownership and arena operators are much in tune with the growth of women's hockey in Michigan,” said O'Brien. “They are welcoming us with open arms."

The agreement with Southside Ice Arena gives Aquinas’ teams a home venue with a variety of amenities, including:

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--Support area children while wearing pajamas in public during this dash down Division Avenue Saturday, March 28.

This brisk run begins at  9 a.m. at the Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Center, located at 2500 S. Division.  The dash ends in Alger Heights. There is also a Jammie Jog fun run for kids age 12 and younger after the 5K race. Teddy bears can come along.

My Town: New Director of Parks and Recreation announced


GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (City of Grand Rapids)-- David Marquardt has joined the City of Grand Rapids as its new Parks and Recreation Director. “I am pleased David has chosen to be part of our team. His experience in leading the Planning, Design and Construction division of the Denver Parks Department positions him well to jump in and lead implementation of parks millage investments,” said City Manager Gregory Sundstrom.

In the final stages of the interview process, Marquardt visited Grand Rapids and had an opportunity to meet community members, park advocates, and City officials. Reflecting on that process, Marquardt stated, “I was impressed by the community’s demonstrated commitment to parks and recreation services. There is energy here that is intriguing and exciting.”

My Town GR South: Date set for ice rink build at Wilcox Park

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— The date is set to rebuild a wintertime attraction at Wilcox Park.

A team of volunteers will create the outdoor ice rink Jan. 7 at 3 p.m. Help is still needed to maintain the ice rink through winter.  Volunteers will be responsible for clearing snow off the ice.   

Sponsors are also needed to help make this attraction a reality.  The Eastown Community Association still needs to purchase a new liner for the rink.
