Five cars involved in chain reaction crash

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Five cars were involved in a crash on Knapp Street, west of East Beltline Thursday.

Witnesses say a Rapid bus had pulled out from Celebration Cinema in front of a car, causing that car to swerve and crash into another vehicle, which caused a chain reaction.

The bus driver did not stop but witnesses believe the bus driver probably did not see the car.

Man critically hurt in marijuana grow explosion, fire

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Two men were injured, one critically, in an explosion that lead to a house fire on the city's South Side.

The explosion happened around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 1400 block of Sigsbee St SE.

The Grand Rapids Police Department was called to assist the fire department after learning the fire started in a marijuana grow operation.

GRPD: Man arrested after pointing gun at wife

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Police have arrested a 23-year-old man who they say pointed a gun at his wife before briefly barricading himself inside a Grand Rapids home Thursday evening.

Responding officers said they saw the man's wife, also 23 years old, leaving the home when they arrived. She told them her husband had fired the weapon and was threatening suicide. Officers surrounded the house and made announcements urging the man to come out of the house, which he did without incident shortly before 6 o'clock. At that point, police tweeted he'd been taken into custody.

GRPD: Shot fired during gas station robbery

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Police are looking for the person who robbed a southwest Grand Rapids gas station Wednesday night.

Shortly after 9 o'clock, officers were called to Clyde Park Fuel, police said, on Clyde Park at Alger (along the border with the City of Wyoming).

A single shot was fired during the robbery. No injuries were reported.

2 men wearing ski masks rob gas station

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Two men who robbed a gas station on the city's Southeast Side still are on the run, police say.

The suspects held up the Mobil gas station at Burton Street and Breton Road SE just after 11:30 a.m. Saturday, according a Grand Rapids police sergeant. They fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Both of the men were wearing a dark colored hoodie and ski masks.

Police: April homicide suspect already in prison

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Police suspect Demario Antwan Chandler, 30, is the shooter in an April homicide on Grand Rapids' Southwest Side.

German Antonio Rodriguez-Duarte, 34, was found laying between houses early in the morning of Saturday, April 18, in the 500 block of Hall Street SW, near Caufield Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a news release published Wednesday afternoon, Grand Rapids police say Chandler will be brought back to Grand Rapids for arraignment on Rodriguez-Duarte's death.

Chandler currently is held in Jackson's Cooper Street Correctional Facility on two weapons-related offenses.

GRPD, FBI search SE homes for wanted man

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- A tip led to a heavy police presence in parts of the southeast side of Grand Rapids Monday afternoon.

Members of the GRPD Major Case and Special Response teams, as well as members of the Grand Rapids FBI Task Force, were searching for 24-year-old Fredrick Desean Gibbs, who's wanted on a felony parole absconding warrant and a felony warrant for committing perjury on a life offense.

Investigators searched homes in the 2000 block of Kalamazoo Ave. SE, near  Burton St., and in the 1100 block of Marshall Ave. SE, near the Eastern and Hall intersection. Police said the people who live in those homes were extremely cooperative and consented to having their homes searched.

Officers didn't find Gibbs, though.
