Orangeville Fire Department sponsoring Tigers Ball Game Trip

The Orangeville Fire Department, located in the Gun Lake Area, is sponsoring a bus trip to see the Detroit Tigers play the Los Angeles Angels on April 19, 2014. The cost is $65.00 for the bus trip and the game, to be paid at the time reservations are made. Everyone going is to meet at the Fire Department at 8:00am the day of the trip.

Meet a Harlem Globetrotter for free during anti-bullying event Jan. 20

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—A Harlem Globetrotter is taking a break from the court to help prevent bullying in West Michigan.

“Flight Time” Lang will present the “ABCs of Bullying Prevention” at The Salvation Army Kroc Center on Monday, Jan. 20 at 1 p.m.  During the 40 minute program, Flight Time will show off some of his incredible ball-handling skills while talking about the bullying prevention program the Globetrotters created in coordination with the National Campaign to Stop Violence.

The ABCs of Bullying Prevention are Action, Bravery and Compassion.  The program is meant to help elementary school children become more aware of the various types of bullying and how to stop them before they begin.  The event is free and open to the public.

The Salvation Army Kroc Center is located at 2500 S. Division Avenue.

Ottawa Hills hosts Floyd Mayweather Classic Jan. 18

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--  Ottawa Hills High School will host Saginaw Arthur Hill  this Saturday, Jan. 18 as part of the Floyd Mayweather Classic.

Five games will play out on the basketball court, starting with Lansing Sexton vs. River Rouge at noon.  Kalamazoo Central will take on Lansing Eastern at 2 p.m., followed by East English Village vs. Flint Southwestern at 4 p.m. and the Muskegon Big Reds vs. Chicago Orr at 6 p.m.  Ottawa Hills will close out the classic at 8 p.m.

Tickets to the Floyd Mayweather Classic are $10 and are good for all five games.  Children age 5 and under are free. Tickets are available at the door or at the Ottawa Hills Athletic Office Wednesday through Friday, from 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.   OK Conference, Golden Age and Grand Rapids Public Schools staff passes will not be accepted at the event.

ADA TOWNSHIP, Mich.—With more than a foot of fresh snow throughout most of West Michigan, it’s a perfect time to learn how to cross-country ski.

The Ada Township Parks and Recreation Department will offer a introductory workshop this Saturday, Jan. 11.  Participants will learn about the necessary equipment and techniques to cross-country ski before heading out into Roselle Park to try it out, with the guidance of a coach.

The workshop is $5 for adults and $3 for youth, not including equipment rentals.   Rentals are available locally at Bill & Paul’s Sporthaus, located at 1200 E. Paris.   Participants can also bring their own skis.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.---Experience Grand Rapids, the official destination marketing organization for Kent County, recently announced the launch of its new personalized travel planning website, www.GRCityTwist.com.

The new interactive website targets 18 different interests, from “art lovers” to “thrill seekers”, allowing the visitor to customize their trip.  For example, craft beer enthusiasts can find breweries to explore, activities and nightlife related to craft beer, and accommodations for the weekend.

EXGR launched the new, mobile-friendly website on Dec. 17 at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park with the hospitality community, business and political leaders, and its Certified Tourism Ambassadors.

East vs. West Battle of I-96 Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament Dec. 21

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Classrooms are closed for winter break, but student athletes will still be breaking a sweat Saturday, Dec. 21 as the East vs. West Battle of I-96 Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament returns to Grand Rapids.

In the inaugural tournament last year, West was best, winning three of its five games.  The rules are the same this year--  the winner of each game will earn one point for its side of the state.  The region with the most points will earn bragging rights until next year.

Half-time entertainment is also planned for many of the games, including half-court shot contests for prizes.  The game day schedule is as follows:
