Calvin adds major, minor in public health

Beginning in the fall of 2012, Calvin College will become the first undergraduate institution in west Michigan to offer a major in public health--an emerging field, which offers a wide range of career opportunities both locally and globally.

Arlene Hoogewerf, chair of Calvin's biology department, is co-directing the new public health program with Economics department chair Scott Vander Linde. Hoogewerf says that the push to offer public health programs at the undergraduate level has occurred within the last five years.

Vista Charter Academy students beautify their school in celebration of Earth Day

While Earth Day fell on a Sunday this year, the 4th graders at Vista Charter Academy wanted to celebrate the holiday with their fellow classmates, so the school coordinated a special outing to the Huizenga Brothers Greenhouse. There the students learned about horticulture, the seasons involved in planting and harvesting the flowers, and the retail side of greenhousing. The students then did their part to care for the environment and their school by planting flowers donated by greenhouse owner Mrs. Cynthia Huizenga. Mr. Sterkens 4th grade class and the 8th grade National Junior Honors Society planted the flowers under the school sign for a beautiful spring makeover. The green initiative taught students the responsibility of caring for the environment while being good stewards of the facilities they’ve been given.
