City of Grand Rapids taps community for Chief of Police search

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—The City of Grand Rapids is turning to community members to help select the city’s next police chief.

The city will hold community input meetings beginning Tuesday, Feb. 18 at Union High School.  The city has also posted an online survey for residents, addressing what people want in their next police chief.  The surveys are due March 7.

 “Community input is critical to finding the best police chief to lead our community. Residents, businesses, local law enforcement professionals, neighborhood and community leaders, and youth will all have an opportunity to share the qualities they believe the Grand Rapids’ new police chief should possess,” said City Manager Greg Sundstrom.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--  Plans to transform two properties in Grand Rapids will go before the East Hills Council of Neighbors Board Monday night.

The new owner of 701 Wealthy St. SE wants to transform the former service station into a restaurant.  The plans call for an addition off the west side of the building.  Because the property is located in the Cherry Hill Historic District, the Historic Preservation Commission and Planning Commission will have to approve the plans before construction can move forward.

ADA TOWNSHIP, Mich.—With more than a foot of fresh snow throughout most of West Michigan, it’s a perfect time to learn how to cross-country ski.

The Ada Township Parks and Recreation Department will offer a introductory workshop this Saturday, Jan. 11.  Participants will learn about the necessary equipment and techniques to cross-country ski before heading out into Roselle Park to try it out, with the guidance of a coach.

The workshop is $5 for adults and $3 for youth, not including equipment rentals.   Rentals are available locally at Bill & Paul’s Sporthaus, located at 1200 E. Paris.   Participants can also bring their own skis.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Three Grand Rapids Public Library locations are joining the Family Place Libraries national network, which is focused on providing resources for families to nurture the development of young children.

The main library, Madison Square branch and Ottawa Hills branch all recently received the Family Place designation, which means each location will develop the Family Place Libraries model of learning.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Guiding Light Mission is sending out one final call for donations ahead of its Christmas dinner, Sunday, Dec. 22.

The deadline for donations is Friday, Dec. 20.    In addition to any financial donations, Guiding Light Mission is in need of the following items:

  • Spiral hams
  • Turkey
  • French's onions
  • Dinner rolls

Guiding Light Mission is also accepting Christmas decoration donations to make the shelter feel like home.   All donations can be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Mission, located at 255 S. Division Ave.

Experience Grand Rapids launches personalized travel planning website

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.---Experience Grand Rapids, the official destination marketing organization for Kent County, recently announced the launch of its new personalized travel planning website, www.GRCityTwist.com.

The new interactive website targets 18 different interests, from “art lovers” to “thrill seekers”, allowing the visitor to customize their trip.  For example, craft beer enthusiasts can find breweries to explore, activities and nightlife related to craft beer, and accommodations for the weekend.

EXGR launched the new, mobile-friendly website on Dec. 17 at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park with the hospitality community, business and political leaders, and its Certified Tourism Ambassadors.
