Organizers: Beat the Heat party had a great turnout
News

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)- Friday started out as a cloudy, rainy day but ended up hot and sunny - perfect weather for a Beat the Heat free ice cream party in Grand Rapids.  WZZM 13 and partners Family Fare and Country Fresh teamed up with the Salvation Army's Kroc Center to give away free ice cream sandwiches to everyone in the community.  Hundreds of children and adults showed up.

Stephanie Denton with the Kroc Center said, "We're so excited because it's our very first one and we had no idea how many people would come, but it's such a great turnout and we're really excited that everyone came and we can't wait to do more this year.  Eveyone is loving it, everyone's having a great time and people who've never been here before they came today and it's just been a great partnership."

In addition to the free ice cream, there was a Slip 'n Slide and a family movie with popcorn - all free.

The Kroc Center plans to do this again this summer.
