U.S. 131 bridge work moves south
News

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - As one bridge on the south end of Grand Rapids opens, another one closes.

The Hall Street bridge over U.S. - 131 is expected to open at around noon on Monday.  The bridge has been closed since mid-June.

Monday, the Burton Street bridge over U.S. - 131 and the Norfolk Southern Railroad will close for construction through late October.  That project will include concrete deck replacement, substructure repairs, approach work and realignment of the southbound U.S.- 131 off ramp to eastbound Burton Street.

The Burton Street bridge work over the railroad will include concrete deck replacement, pin and hanger replacement, substructure repairs, and approach work.

Sidewalks on both bridges will be widened from 6 feet to 8 feet.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says that the $6 million project will extend the service life of the bridges and increase ride quality. The sidewalk and barrier upgrades will increase safety and improve aesthetics for both pedestrians and motorists.

Motorists will be detoured to the new Hall Street Bridge.  Three lanes of U.S. - 131 will remain open through the project.
