GRAND RAPIDS, Mich (WZZM) -- 43 years ago Friday, a decision by the Supreme Court on the Roe vs. Wade case legalized abortion in the United States.

On this 43rd anniversary, students at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School lit luminaries to remember the victims of abortion.

This is the 16th year the school has held their peaceful protest. School leaders say just because abortion is legal, it does not make it moral.

"It's a serious event but there's joy in our hearts because we have hope. And hope says someday we wont have to do this," said Colleen Lowe, Marketing and Recruitment Director at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School.

Thousands of people across the country are expected to hold rallies and marches Friday. Many hold a rally every year on this date to mark the Supreme Court's decision to legalize abortion.
