Pregnant woman describes devastating fire

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- A Grand Rapids woman is thankful for several firefighters for saving her dog from a fire.

s a story WZZM 13 News first told you about Wednesday. Destaniey Watson, 26, says she's glad her dog, Bella, is okay. Now, she's trying to rebuild her life after the fire. She's nine months pregnant with her first child. The day of the fire, she was at a doctor's appointment.

"Someone called me and said my house was on fire," Destaniey said. "They were kicking-in the door."

As Destaniey rushed home, she had no idea Grand Rapids firefighters had pulled Bella from the apartment and were giving her CPR. Neighbors watched and took pictures.

"And after about a half an hour later, [Bella] turned and we could see a little tail wagging and everyone started clapping," says Jordan Roberts, who posted one of the pictures on Facebook. Her picture was shared hundreds of times.

At the scene, firefighters handed Bella over to Destaniey's dad, who got there before her.

"He was holding her," said Destaniey. "She was covered in black smoke. I was just hugging her, holding her, I was happy."

Bella is now staying at Destaniey
s mom's house while she tries to find a new place to live.

"I lost everything in my house, all my baby stuff, I don't have clothes, no shoes, and the baby stuff has smoke damage."

Despite all the loss, Destaniey considers herself lucky. She and her baby were not injured, and thanks to those firefighters, Bella is fine, too.

"I just want to tell them that I'm thankful. Bella is here. Thank you all."

If you would like to help by donating gift cards, clothes, or supplies, WZZM 13 has arranged for donations to be dropped off at In The Image, 1823 S. Division Ave. in Grand Rapids. In The Image is open from 9am-4pm.
