GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- The school year is underway for students at Grand Rapids Christian schools.

Monday morning, children at the middle school set foot in their new building for the first time.

The new school on the corner of Burton and Chesaning now holds 5th- through 8th-grade students. It used to be the Grand Rapids Public School district's Shawnee Park elementary school.

"We had a grand opening and ribbon cutting just last week Wednesday and had over a thousand people from the community out to celebrate with us and dedicate the building," said GRCMS Principal Ashanti Bryant. "It's really incredible, a neat opportunity for us to be in the heart of the city and have a vibrant school like what we have."

Other West Michigan schools, including GRPS, start on September 8. The Grand Rapids Catholic diocese's schools start Tuesday.
