Stuff the Bus - And Win!

Back to school means STUFF THE BUS!

Amway, Fifth Third Bank, the Student and Advancement Foundation and Hand2Hand Ministries have teamed up to fill 3,000 backpacks for midddle school students in the greater Grand Rapids area who may not otherwise be able to afford the essential items needed to start the school year.

Last year, the community donated classroom essentials to fill 2,500 backpacks. Their goal for 2011 is to fill 3,000 backpacks.

Monetary donations and new classroom essentials will be accepted from August 3-20 at all Fifth Third Bank financial centers in the greater Grand Rapids area.

Friday, August 12 12:00-4:00 VSA Open House.  The afternoon will include exciting and unique events for the whole family, including: make-and-take arts and crafts activities for people of all ages and abilities.

Saturday, August 13 10:00 – 3:00 Reading Rocks Festival in Rockford.  Author’s Row, Scholastic Book Fair, Early Childhood Sensory Tent. Storybook Character Sidewalk Parade, Garden Park Stage Entertainment… oh my goodness. I couldn’t have planned this better myself.

Monday, August 15 Go pick some blueberries! Irvine has delicious organic ones!

News Release: KENT COUNTY: It’s the season of Senior Open Houses and while most celebrate the accomplishments of graduating high school, this Open House celebrates a different type of senior.

On July 22, 2011 the Kent County Senior Millage is hosting a Senior Millage Open House from 9:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the Wyoming Senior Center (WSC), 2380 DeHoop Ave.

The event will feature twenty minute presentations from local experts on hot topics like identity theft, healthy aging, transportation and technology. Thirty-one organizations that provide Kent County Senior Millage services will have booths and staff on-hand to explain their programs.

“The Kent County Senior Millage provides 46 unique services for older adults in Kent County,” says Anne Ellermets, Kent County Contract Coordinator at the Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan (AAAWM), which administers the millage.

Kroc Center celebrating summer with Hot Kroc Nights

The Salvation Army Kroc Center on South Division in Grand Rapids is about to get hot.

On Friday, July 22nd, you can see the film Despicable Me at the Kroc Center for free.  The event will feature crowd activities and special giveaways. That all starts at 9pm.

The Kroc Center will also be celebrating National Night on Tuesday, August 2nd with the film Gnomeo and Juliet.  Friday, August 19th will feature "How to Train Your Dragon."

All three events will be held in the center's outdoor amphitheater with fun for the whole family.

You can also enjoy the Kroc Center's playground for free.  That's where you'll find the giant table and chairs sculpture that sat atop Grand Rapids' blue bridge during the first Art Prize.

The Kroc Center is located at 2500 S. Division.

Free bike helmet giveaway set for Thursday

The Grand Rapids Griffins and Safe Kids Greater Grand Rapids will be giving away bike helmets to children on Thursday, June 16th at the Grand Rapids Public Library's Ottawa Hills Branch (1150 Giddings Ave. SE).

The giveway will take place at 2pm with at least 50 free bike helmets available for kids ages 1 to 12.  The helmets are first-come, first-served with sizes subject to availability and a parent or legal guardian must be present for a child to receive a helmet.

Volunteers from the Griffins, Safe Kids, Centennial Securities and Delta Subaru will be on hand to properly fit the helmets.  Griff will also be on hand.

This is the fourth year for the "Lids at the Library" event.
