SVS Vision, VSP Vision Care and Transitions Optical Team Up to Help Michigan Students

News Release:

Mount Clemens, Mich., May 14, 2012 – Detroit-based SVS Vision is partnering with VSP® Vision Care and Transitions Optical to bring two fully-stocked, state-of-the-art mobile eye exam clinics, nicknamed “Eyenstein” and “SeeZar,” to Harms Elementary School in Detroit on May 22 from 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. and Mulick Park Elementary School in Grand Rapids on May 24 from 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m., to provide free, comprehensive eye exams and eyewear to hundreds of students in need. The addition of “SeeZar” to the outreach program this year will enable more kids to receive care.

Harms Elementary is located at 2400 Central Street, in Detroit.

One-Day Outdoor Book Festival, BookFest, Offers Family Fun

The Grand Rapids Public Library will host an all day book festival, BookFest, on June 2, 2012 in conjunction with Festival of the Arts. The event runs from 10 am to 5:30 pm in front of the Main Library – 111 Library St NE and is sponsored by the Grand Rapids Public Library Foundation.

The outdoor stage will feature musical performances, author appearances and a poetry slam. Kids are encouraged to dress as their favorite book character and join the Storybook Parade led by PBS Kids characters Super Why and Princess Presto. The Salvation Army Kroc Center will be on hand to help kids make a costume if they do not have one.

Michigan Black AIDS Awareness Campaign Begins

HIV rates in Michigan are nine times higher for African Americans compared to whites, and the rate of new diagnoses is climbing among the 13-24 year old African American population. The Kent County Health Department is planning several events for the Ninth Annual Michigan Black AIDS Awareness Campaign for the month of February.  Numerous testing opportunities will underscore the need to “Know Your Status.”

 

  • February 6th: 6 p.m.- 8 p.m. - Heartside Ministry, 54 S. Division, Grand Rapids
  • February 7th: 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.

If you and your family are looking for some fun and exercise at the same time, consider spending time at Kentwood Ice Arena.

The Arena features Sunday afternoon open skating from 3-5pm: Adults $4.00, Students $3.00 and kids under 7 are free with skate rental $2.00 or bring your own.

Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays they feature a Lunch Skate from 11:30am to 1:00pm for $4.00 and there is no charge for skate rental. All ages welcome and kids 5 and younger are free.
