Opinion: It's my Point of view on St. Mary's Church

St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the oldest Catholic Church in Grand Rapids, MI. and what a pretty church it is. Today there were several vases of pink roses, I’m guessing maybe from their May procession? When I looked around the church, I’m guessing there was maybe 50 people or less at 5 o’clock Mass. I thought how sad. It is very evident that the older people at Mass who do take part in helping Father Nolan are there because they want to be, very dedicated.

I belong to Holy Spirit Parish on the west side of Grand Rapids but every so often I get the urge to go to Mass at St. Mary’s; it kind of brings me back to reality, makes me remember my childhood parish in Northern Michigan.

St. Mary’s has an associate pastor, Father Scott Nolan a very young priest, who is a great speaker and it is apparent he likes what he is doing. I was disappointed though on my past two visits to St. Mary’s, to take notice that Father Nolan has no altar boys or girls to assit him but yet today, the picture on the front of the Bulletin was full of children who had recently made their First Holy Communion, so it’s obvious there are children in the parish.

This is a perfect opportunity for students in high school or college to step up and give Father Nolan a hand. The downtown area is very populated with student dorms, apartments & condos but where are these people attending church? St. Mary’s is just located on First St., a hop & skip from the Ford Museum.

On my way home from church, I passed a few bars & restaurants and wondered, why are these parking lots filled but not at St. Mary’s? Delaying dinner by one hour and going to hear Father Nolan speak could be the start of a perfect evening. What a great way to end your week.
