Gimme Shelter - A three day Symposium

Gimme Shelter, April 7 - 9, 2011, is a three day symposium on Human Shelter and Sustainability.  The 3 day event began with a talk by bestselling author Sarah Susanka ('The Not So Big House' book series), and continues with a variety of guest speakers and workshops on issues ranging from creating community, living a sustainable lifestyle, green Grand Rapids and using design and architecture as tools for social change.

After the great success of last year’s inaugural Latin American Film Festival, Aquinas College, Calvin College and Grand Valley State University are pleased to announce the second annual Grand Rapids Latin American Film Festival which will take place April 7-9, at Celebration! Cinema  River Town  and Wealthy Theatre. 

The festival's goal is to provide the entire West Michigan community and students with a unique and enriching opportunity to acquaint themselves with the latest and most acclaimed Latin American films.

With that objective in mind, our committee has selected six movies from different geographical areas – México, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Perú, USA / Colombia, and Argentina – focusing on a wide range of contemporary subjects.

Grand Rapids, Mich.- Urban Pizza announces that it will be teaming up with Kids’ Food Basket here in Grand Rapids in 2011. The partnership was created to help the non-profit maximize donations for the children-focused lunch makers. Each month in 2011, starting March 23rd residents and local business owners will be able to bring in a specific donation item to Urban Pizza located at 950 Wealthy(on the corner of Diamond and Wealthy) and receive a menu item FREE.  

The second event is a “Juice Drive”, scheduled for Thursday April 21, 2011 from 11:00am -1:30pm.

GRAND RAPIDS – State Representative Brandon Dillon (D-Grand Rapids) invites constituents to join him for an informal conversation about improving state government at one of his monthly coffee hours in April.

Dillon's April coffee hours will take place:

  • This Monday, April 4, from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at Kava House, 1445 Lake Drive SE in Grand Rapids.
  • Monday, April 11, from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at Sundaes in the Heights, 2404 Eastern Ave. SE in Grand Rapids.

Dillon also holds a third regular coffee hour each month with State Representative Roy Schmidt (D-Grand Rapids). This month's coffee hour will take place on Monday, April 18, from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at Fat Boy Burgers, 2450 Plainfield Ave.

News Release:

(Grand Rapids, MI, March 30, 2011)- Immanuel Reformed Church, located at 1300 East Beltline Avenue in Grand Rapids, MI.,  would like to invite Grand Rapids and its surrounding communities to join them and participate in the 1st annual "Down Hill Derby."

On May 15, 2011, from 12:30-6:00pm, the tranquil grounds of Immanuel Reformed Church will be transformed into  "Immanuel Motor-Free Speedway."  We're going to drop the engines and bring back an old American pastime, soap box derby racing!

We’re inviting teams from around the community to design, build and race their best cars down our hill for a shot at great prizes and soapbox derby glory!  Racers will be broken up into four different age categories.  Colt (6-11 year olds), Mustang (12-17 years), Stallion (18-49 years) and Super Stallion (50 and up).  Each racer is guaranteed a minimum of two races or heats per age class.RE
