The Best Mother's Day Present

The Best Mother's Day Present

It's a Mother's Day present every mother was wishing for.

The bright sun, the warm temperatures, and the crack of a bat filled the air at the Matt Urban Complex in Holland. After several weeks of more foul weather than foul balls, patrons of the games soaked up the rays as they cheered on their teams. There was some winning moments. There were some moments of empathic heart-ache. But all on all, there was a good time had by all. Children were entertained by either the love of the game, love of the playground, or love of the concessions.  Parents and grandparents cheered, jeered and laughed. But through all the dust clouds, close calls and crowd roars, the best feeling of all was the positive sportsmanship displayed by all.

An annual tradition, the USSA held the 2011 Great Lakes FIreball Challenge at its new home in Holland.

Friends of G.R. Parks plants 50 trees in Garfield Park

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Mayor Heartwell has proclaimed April 29, 2011 as Arbor Day in Grand Rapids. And the city, along with Friends of Grand Rapids Parks are teaming up by planting 50 trees and seedlings in Garfield Park.

"Arbor Day is a great time to reflect on the importance of trees. And having kids out here to realize the role that trees play, from pulling carbon to stopping storm water, and beautify communities, they're all really important lessons," said Steve Faber, of Friends of Grand Rapids Parks.

Tree planting locations will be along the Madison Avenue entrance to Garfield Park and near the parking lots and tennis courts along Burton Street.

The trees being planted come through a grant from DTE Energy Foundation Tree Planting Grant Program with additional donations from Katerberg Verhage and Calvin College's Native Landscapes program.
