GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - For culinary students, meeting any chef is an exciting opportunity.

Having the chance to meet a nationally renowned chef who was also the winner of The Food Network’s Hell Kitchen, is an even more thrilling occasion. On Wednesday, June 11, students from Grand Rapids Public Schools, the Grand Rapids Community College culinary schools along with Baxter Community Center met Chef Rock Harper at the Downtown Market Grand Rapids. Harper is in Grand Rapids this week in collaboration with the Grand Rapids African American Health Institute for their bi-annual event, Evening of Soul.

Grand Rapids African American Health Institute (GRAAHI) is hosting the reception featuring Chef Rock Harper for local students who have chosen or are interested in culinary arts as a career. Attendees on Wednesday, June 11th had the chance to chat with Chef Rock Harper as he shared his insights on overcoming the odds and becoming a successful culinary artist, his experience on the Food Network’s Hell’s Kitchen, as well as general cooking tips for students and community members in attendance.

The event focused on the importance of eating healthy, fresh food and meal preparation.  It was a prequel to the June 12th Evening of Soul celebration featuring Chef Rock Harper and local health advocates.
