GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— Neighbors and city leaders began busting up pavement Monday to make way for new green space.

Construction crews will replace a 2.4 acre parking lot at 400 Pleasant Ave. with a new city park in the Heritage Hill and South Hill neighborhoods. Pleasant Park is expected to open to the community in 2014.

A neighborhood planning process that began in 2010 gave birth to plans for Pleasant Park.  Funding for the project comes from Michigan’s Natural Resources Trust Fund, community development block grants, a neighborhood Special Assessment District, and private dollars raised through Heritage Hill Neighborhood, South Hill Neighborhood Association and Friends of Grand Rapids Parks.
