616 Bicycle Fabrications: Local Bike Manufacturer with Big Ideas

By Chelsea Slocum

Sitting at the 616 Bicycle Fabrications headquarters with John Muezenmeyer, Aaron Joppe and Daniel Koert, I couldn’t help but notice an air of excitement and anticipation in the room. It’s no wonder; since 616 Fabrications began operating in July 2011, orders have been piling up. They have formed partnerships with retailers nationwide and in just eight months, have become a leading manufacturer of mountain bike components. What sets them apart from competitors is their intense desire to not only grow their business, but improve the local economy as well.

By Deborah Johnson Wood

After five years at 5 Lyon in downtown Grand Rapids, One Girl's Treasure is preparing to move to a more compact business district on the city's southeast side.

The women's apparel consignment shop will downsize from a 2,200-square-foot sales floor to 1,600 when it relocates in early April to 1146 Wealthy St. SE, the site of the former iCandy store. MP Talent

MP Talent

by J. Bennett Rylah

Malinda Petersen has a degree in theater and spent some time working on a career in acting and learning the business. But in 2009, she became a different kind of entrepreneur when she founded MP Talent Management Group LLC in response to the film incentives coming to the state of Michigan. "[I intended] to be a connection for actors from West Michigan trying to get roles in some of the films," she says.

Despite the initial rush of business, Petersen found the incentives to be less than stellar."I think that we weren't ready with a strong enough infrastructure to handle the amount of work and the level of work that was common to the state," she says. "The idea behind the incentives was to put Michigan residents to work, and California was bringing everybody with them and setting up shop."

G-Sync: Hello, Innovation! Welcome High Five Co-Op Brewery!

G-Sync: Hello, Innovation! Welcome High Five Co-Op Brewery!

by Tommy Allen

If last week’s Chipotle restaurant commercial during the Grammy Awards taught us anything, it was that there is beauty in the small and simple, but most of all, we should not be afraid to start over again.

This is also how I would describe the burgeoning startup by craft brewers who just voted on the nameHigh Five Co-op Brewery, taking an important next step in their effort to launch Michigan’s first co-op brewery.

The name plays off many popular and uniquely Michigan components: the notion that it takes two hands to make a high five, thus playing off the teamwork aspects of a co-operative, or simply the hand shape that is definitely an image every resident of our state understands.

Kim Fogg, founder of Global Sustainable Partnerships(GSP), is a very busy woman. She lives life on the go, split between three places: Washington D.C., Grand Rapids and Tanzania. She is a dynamic woman who, in just one year, has provided 8,000 children with clean water, something they they never had access to prior. And that’s just the beginning.

The Spark

Rewind back to 2010. Fogg is a success in the corporate world, working for a management consulting firm. For family reasons, she needs to relocate back to her hometown of Grand Rapids. She is subsequently let go from her position in Washington D.C. Shortly thereafter, her father passes away. Fogg is at a crossroads in both her professional and personal life.
