My Town: Restaurant Week GR to include specials from 66 restaurants

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Restaurant Week is about a month away, but you can start making your plans by salivating over the menus.

The 5th annual event runs from Aug. 13 to Aug. 24 at 66 Grand Rapids restaurants. This year, the theme is "Perfect Pairings" to showcase beverages that pair well with foods.

Restaurants are now taking reservations for Restaurant Week Grand Rapids. This year, 44 restaurants will offer 3-course locally inspired menus for $28 per person, including:

My Town GR South: Vintage Street Market returns July 13

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- The community is invited to visit the monthly Vintage Street Market taking place on Sunday, July 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Located in the Downtown Market, 435 Ionia Avenue SW, this shopping event has something for everyone, with 20 indoor vendor booths featuring collectibles, antiques, vintage items and more.

My Town GR South: Hollywood actor to celebrate birthday in Eastown

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—A Hollywood star will celebrate his birthday in Eastown this Thursday, July 10.

Thomas Nicholas, who starred in "Rookie of the Year" and the American Pie movies, will be in town to celebrate the 15 year anniversary of American Pie, as well as his birthday.  Nicholas will be hosting and performing for “Billy’s 90’s Holla Back” at Billy’s Lounge.  His band is expected to take the stage at 8 p.m.

If you can’t make it out, Nicholas will also be grabbing a hot dog and meeting fans at Yesterdog from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit the event page on Facebook.

My Town: Piece of Michigan history returns to the streets

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--- A piece of Michigan history will return to the streets of Southeast Grand Rapids this holiday weekend.

Organizers of the Hollyhock Lane Parade say it’s the oldest continuing Fourth of July procession in the state.  The parade was founded in 1934 by the Calvin-Giddings Patriotic Association.  This will be the event’s 80th anniversary.

The Hollyhock Lane Parade will kick off at Calvin Avenue and Alexander Street SE at 8:30 a.m.  on July 4. The procession will end at Franklin Street and Giddings Avenue.  A patriotic ceremony will begin in the backyard of 847 Giddings shortly thereafter.  Float awards, refreshments and live music will also be featured.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— ArtPrize isn’t just for adults.

Nearly 50 Grand Rapids students are competing in the second annual SMARTArt competition, which will be highlighted during this year’s ArtPrize. SMART stands for Students Making Art with a Renewable Theme.  Last week, leaders from Grand Rapids Public Schools, Consumers Energy, ArtPrize and the city of Grand Rapids gathered to celebrate this year’s entries and announce the top 20 semifinalists.  This year’s list includes:

My Town: Local First Street Party is ready to rock on June 7

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Local First will hold its 11th annual Street Party on Saturday, June 7 outside Bistro Bella Vita from 3 p.m. to midnight.

This year's event is presented by Founders Brewing Company with stage sponsor Celebration Cinema. Last year, more than 12,000 attendees attended the 10th anniversary Local First Street Party and enjoyed Founders beer, local food  and food trucks, family art  and sidewalk chalk art, interactive music, and a great music set. The Local First Street Party is free and open to all ages; there will be music and entertainment for everyone to enjoy at this event.

"The Street Party is one of the biggest highlights of our year. Local First puts on this event to showcase local businesses and talented individuals, celebrate the diversity and vibrancy of our community, and kick off the summer right!" said Elissa Hillary, executive director of Local First.

WANTED: Local chefs for WZZM 13 News

WZZM 13 News at Noon is looking for local chefs to be involved in cooking segments airing on Fridays and Wednesdays.

Wednesday’s segments will focus on healthy recipes, so please specify if you’re interested in healthy cooking.

For the segments, chefs should arrive at the station (645 3 Mile Road NW) at 11:45 a.m., and stay until the segment airs around 12:20 p.m. WZZM 13 will provide a gas stovetop, but chefs should bring all equipment/ingredients needed to make their dish.
