A piece of Grand Rapids comes to Whitehall Saturday

WHITEHALL, Mich.—The Whitehall community can get a taste of Grand Rapids without visiting the big city during the River City Road Show Saturday, November 2.

"Fauxgrass Quartet" and "Big Dudee Roo" will take the stage for the event, which starts at 7 p.m. at the Howmet Playhouse.

"I'm excited to hear the Fauxgrass Quartet and Big Dudee Roo on our stage," says Playhouse Managing Director Katie Trzaska.  "These are two of the top bluegrass-rooted bands in West Michigan, and it's going to be a good time."

A variety of vendors will also feature their products.

Volunteers attempt to break reading world record

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Reading books could put River City Scholars Charter Academy in the record books.

On Thursday, October 3, second grade students from River City Scholars joined volunteers from the Grand Rapids Rotary Club  to read the book “Otis” by Loren Long.  Approximately 81 students took part in activity, which is part of a nationwide event organized by Jumpstart and the Pearson Foundation to promote early literacy.

Last year’s event broke the world record for adults and children reading simultaneously, with 2,385,305 people participating. The school hopes to find out Friday if they helped set a new record.

Organizer of Christian music summer concert series hopes to expand next year

ROCKFORD, Mich.-- "The old adage, 'You build it - they will come' is spot-on when describing the huge success of Rockford's 2013 Praise in the Park summer concert series," said Rockford city council member Steve Jazwiec during the September Rockford City Council meeting.

Jazwiec was responding to a recap presentation by former Rockford city council member Rich Moll, who organized Praise in the Park. 

The event is staged in the beautiful confines of Garden Club Park adjacent to the Rogue River and the iconic Rogue River Dam every summer Sunday evening, from June through August. Praise in the Park, in its second season, has seen attendance grow week after week.

Street fair takes over San Chez Bistro ahead of ArtPrize

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—San Chez Bistro will be transformed this weekend for a lively street fair, just in time for ArtPrize.

The festivities run from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, September 15.  Art vendors and musical performers will pack the restaurant and its sidewalk for the event.  Visitors can also get a sneak peek of what San Chez Bistro has in store for ArtPrize.

Proceeds from the street fair will go to supporting Avenue for the Arts.
