KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Kalamazoo is in the running to be named Beer City USA 2013.

The home of Bell’s Brewery received 2,008 votes before the primary poll closed April 26.  Ann Arbor, which garnered 736 votes,   was the only other city to advance to earn 400 or more votes to advance to the final round.

The Beer City USA contest is organized by National Beer Examiner. Last year, Grand Rapids tied with Asheville, North Carolina for  the title of Beer City USA, inspiring T-shirts and specialty beers by the city’s brewers.  Grand Rapids will also be on this year’s final ballot, along with Asheville.  The other finalists are: Bend, OR; Chicago, IL; Cleveland, OH; Denver, CO; Durango, CO; Fort Collins, CO; Madison, WI; Milwaukee, WI; Missoula, MT; Philadelphia, PA; Phoenix-Tempe-Scottsdale, AZ; Portland, OR; Raleigh, NC; San Diego, CA; St. Louis, MO; Tampa, FL.

The final round of voting for  Beer City USA begins at 12 p.m. Monday, May 6 and runs through 11:59 p.m. Friday, May 10.  The final results will be announced at 12 p.m. Monday May 13, which happens to be the start of American Craft Beer Week.
