GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— ArtPrize isn’t just for adults.

Nearly 50 Grand Rapids students are competing in the second annual SMARTArt competition, which will be highlighted during this year’s ArtPrize. SMART stands for Students Making Art with a Renewable Theme.  Last week, leaders from Grand Rapids Public Schools, Consumers Energy, ArtPrize and the city of Grand Rapids gathered to celebrate this year’s entries and announce the top 20 semifinalists.  This year’s list includes:

  •   “Naturalizing Energy” -  Rob Briggs, Kent Education Center-Beltline
  •  “Energy Equilibrium” -  Cheook Chan, City High School
  •  “Reflected Choices” -  Lily Dent, City High School
  • “Mother’s Earth” -  Eddie Garcia, Grand Rapids Montessori
  • “Windy Afternoon” -  Marlee Guiford, City High School
  • “Save the World” -  TaQuasha Gunter, Union High School
  • “Renewable Strength” - Sydney Hardy, City High School
  •  “The Light of Our World” -  Ishijah Jefferson, City High School
  • “What’s Your Choice” -  Victoria Martinez, City High School
  •  “Go Car Go” -  Zach Petroelje,, Kent Education Center - Beltline
  • “Energy of the Dance” -  Amanda Pittman, City High School
  • “Space Saver” - Jason Poisson, Kent Education Center - Beltline
  • “Green Revolution” -  Sarah Stepanovich, City High School
  • “The Naked Eye” - Kaleb Suleiman, Grand Rapids Montessori
  • “Breath” - Riley Tew, Grand Rapids Montessori
  • “Hopping to Energy” - Anneliese Waalkes, City High School

The entries continuing on will be judged by a panel of art professionals from Kendall College of Art & Design, Grand Rapids Community College and Grand Valley State University.  The top 10 winners will be announced during Artprize 2014, which runs Sept. 24 through Oct. 12.  The top winner will be announced during ArtPrize’s Final 20 announcement Oct. 5.
