Grand Rapids Downtown Market offers summer camp for kids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—A new generation of foodies is invited to take part in the Grand Rapids Downtown Market’s inaugural Camp Sprout July 30 through August 29.

The five-week summer camp exposes children ages 6-11 to cooking, baking, nutrition and gardening.  Activities include a visit to the greenhouse and cooking in the children’s hands-on kitchen.

Camp Sprout will take place every Tuesday through Thursday at The Market.  Children can attend morning camp (8 a.m.- 12 p.m.) or afternoon camp (1 p.m. – 5 p.m.)  Each three-day session is $110 per child.

Program themes include:

JULY 30-1: Outdoor Adventure! Campers will explore nature through their surroundings. We examine familiar plants and foods, figuring out unique ways to use them. From sunflower sprouts in the greenhouse to making sunflower butter in the kitchen, this flower has endless possibilities. Campers will also explore color-blasted snacks and making feeders for our bird friends, too. Not only do we get comfortable in the kitchen and greenhouse, but we use our surroundings for fun and food.

AUGUST 6-8: Garden Safari! Who knew all those colors in the garden actually help to attract the right bugs to keep our plants thriving? In this garden safari, we have fun with the bugs that keep our gardens growing. We will also see how these colorful plants can make dyes for all kinds of arts. Ever wanted to make your own bug juice paired with your homemade trail mix to pack on your safari? Look no further from bug snacks to plants with purpose, this safari is for you.

AUGUST 13-15: Urban Farming! No room for a lavish garden or farm at home? No worries, plants grow everywhere and that even means in the middle of the city. Campers will find ways to grow an herb garden on their windowsills and even create their own lavender ice cream. Unconventional planting is our specialty, and not only just to see your tomatoes grow from a shoe but to give us the option of making our food fun at home. Who doesn’t want to create their own pretzels, rolls, and pizza from the garden? Snacks that we can make at home from real plants excite even the smallest sprout.

AUGUST 20-22: Plant Power! Plants are packed with the energy we need to be active. We will take the endless possibilities of plants and use them in ways campers have never imagined! From sprout races to determine what seeds pack the most power, to edible flowers to decorate our kitchen creations to energy smoothies, salsa, and dips, this power packed camp will get these camper’s ready to explore their own super-powers.

AUGUST 27-29: Summer Harvest! To round out the summer, why not rake in herbs from your scratch and sniff garden and learn how to make your own pizza seasoning? Take the final buds and leaves and make some jewelry or swag. And pack up for your final trip before school starts with your own homemade granola bars and berry spritzers. Campers will be ready to celebrate the end of the summer and take what they’ve learned at the Market into their new school year.
