Christmas tree recycling in Grand Rapids

From the city of Grand Rapids - To assist you in the post-holiday cleanup, the City of Grand Rapids Streets and Sanitation Department is again offering FREE Christmas tree recycling.

Free Christmas tree recycling will be available at the following drop-off areas: Riverside Park (north entrance), 2001 Monroe Ave., NE and JC Family Park at 2531 Kalamazoo Ave., SE, during the month of January, 2010. Make sure all ornaments, other decorations, tinsel, nails and tree stands are removed from the tree prior to recycling. Remember to remove any plastic bags from around the tree prior to drop off.

The alternative method for disposing of your tree is to attach a $1.50 City bulk yard waste tag (purple tag) to the tree and place it in your refuse pickup area. City crews will pick up the tagged trees during the month of January.  Christmas trees that are placed in the refuse pick-up area must be properly tagged for collection. All ornaments, other decorations, tinsel, nails and tree stands and any plastic bags on the tree need to be removed prior to collection. If not properly tagged, the taxpayer will receive a violation and possible fine.

Residents with questions are asked to call the Grand Rapids Streets and Sanitation Department at 456-3232.
